The idea of talking to thousands of people really excites me.
How long have you been blogging/vlogging/creating content?
I had a blog throughout architecture school from 2006 to 2010 but due to a lapsed domain hosting, I lost the whole thing. Cut to mid-2017 and I dusted off my YouTube channel and started putting some videos on there, it was a revelation. YouTube suited my style and what I wanted to say so much better than anything else so there I stay.
So you could say a while.
Why did you decide to start your blog/vlog?
I always thought the best way to learn was by just getting stuck in. So I started making videos to get better at it so I could offer it alongside my photography. I had tried on and off to start blogging again and it wasn’t sticking. The two things came together quite quickly after that.
Do you see this becoming a career or part of your career?
With what I do for work my YouTube channel is a great place for me to try out techniques with video, so in a way it is part of my career development already. I love the idea of making a living just producing the content that I want to make.
What do you hope to achieve for your content in 2018 and what’s your big-picture goal?
I really want to try out live streaming this year, I have some big ideas for it. The big picture though is building an audience, the idea of talking to thousands of people really excites me.
What is your favourite social media channel & why?
If you haven’t guessed already it is YouTube. I very rarely watch real TV anymore, most of my entertainment comes through YouTube and I really love how the comments section has evolved in my videos. There are some regular visitors that I always look forward to hearing from.
What is your favourite tool or app that helps in your content creation?
I basically live in Adobe Premiere, to call it my favourite might be going a little far, it's more like Stockholm Syndrome at this point.
Who is your blogging/vlogging/content inspiration and why?
There are two YouTubers that I have followed since they started. The first was The Art of Photography all the way back in 2008 (it was actually a video podcast at that point). Ted who hosts the show has given me advice a few times throughout the years.
The second is Peter McKinnon, his channel has blown up this year (it also only started last year) but he is just such an honest and entertaining human.
What do you like to do on weekends? Where can we find you hanging out?
I tend to work a lot on the weekends so I grab the odd day off in the week. I tend to be cooking or drinking coffee - ideally with friends, old or new.
The places I love are an eclectic mix of Ancoats Coffee Co., Happy Seasons, Rudy’s and The Bird in Hand in Mobberley.
If you could go anywhere in the world or experience any one thing, what would it be?
I’m really in love with the Faroe Islands at the moment, I’d love to do some kayaking around there.
What're your tips for staying motivated and/or organised in your work?
It probably sounds counter-intuitive but just keep doing things. I always found that action promotes motivation, every morning I write at least a page of whatever comes to mind. It doesn’t have to be good, it doesn’t have to make sense. Just going through the motions of a creative activity prepares you for more of the same.
What is the one piece of advice you’d give other content creators & aspiring bloggers/vloggers?
Read or listen to (I absolutely love Audible) books. It's something you always hear but it's because it is so true.
Fun/Random fact about you (go on, surprise us!)
Once, as I walked out of Hampstead Heath Tube station, Robert Webb ran over my foot with a pram.
