I thought to myself, if I don’t blog about it, someone else will!
How long have you been blogging/vlogging/creating content?
I created The Harrogate Girl in September 2015.
Why did you decide to start your blog/vlog?
I was inspired after working on a London blogger event for Bettys (my full-time job). I’ve organised events my whole life but this was so different; more like a photo shoot than an event. I really enjoyed the whole experience, meeting lovely bloggers like Josie from Fashion Mumblr, so tasked myself with repeating the event back in Yorkshire. After searching for Harrogate Bloggers I realised, to my surprise, there wasn’t many who talked about my fabulous hometown. Harrogate has a unique lifestyle, some might say a bubble but I love it; I thought to myself if I don’t blog about it, someone else will!
That evening I stayed up late into the night thinking of names and designing a logo. 4am came and I’d published a website! I was so naive and had no clue how to blog but I jumped straight in with two feet and I’ve never looked back.
Do you see this becoming a career or part of your career?
My blog has consistently grown over the past two years, but I know working a 40 hour a week job hasn’t allowed me to get on with the things to make it even bigger and better. I very much doubt it will ever truly pay the mortgage and, to be honest, I love working for Bettys so wouldn’t want to give that up in a hurry. However, I will give it the time, investment and dedication it needs to become whatever it becomes – this excites me the most!
What do you hope to achieve for your content in 2018 and what’s your big-picture goal?
In 2018, I want to focus on promoting my beautiful town; the aim is for my blog to become the destination of information for people visiting Harrogate and Yorkshire – detailing the best places to eat or where to stay and what to do. I also want to expand my travel page, I have so many trips still to write up and this year we’re planning Amsterdam and Greece.
For the long-term and bigger picture, I want to work harder so people can benefit from following me. I hope to achieve this through more collaborations where my followers greatly benefit from discounts, competitions and offers.
What is your favourite social media channel & why?
I love Instagram, I think it’s because it challenges me so much. I know I need to improve on this channel. Get better at photography, try and beat the algorithms and ensure my audience is engaging with me and I am them.
What is your favourite tool or app that helps in your content creation?
Snapseed is a favourite of mine and just recently I’ve discovered CutStory. However, to keep me organised and in check I use Trello, it’s a project management app with colourful labels, due dates and checklists. I’d be totally lost without it!
Who is your blogging/vlogging/content inspiration and why?
I love to follow and interact with bloggers for the social aspects that the blogging community offers. I also love following Me & Orla and This Is Joules. However, I tend to not look to bloggers for inspiration as I find it’s best to be original and find your own unique selling point. My unique selling point is certainly the Harrogate Lifestyle and being an ambassador for Harrogate and Yorkshire.
What do you like to do on weekends? Where can we find you hanging out?
Well, I love spending time with my boyfriend, family and friends. I’m often found in Bettys having a hot chocolate or my favourite restaurant La Feria.
What're your tips for staying motivated and/or organised in your work?
My Trello app makes my life so much easier, I know where I’m at with my blog posts and can keep on top of project work like a blog audit or organising events. To stay motivated I’d say you need to know your goals and break these down into manageable achievements. By hitting these manageable achievements hitting your goal will be easy! We hope!
What is the one piece of advice you’d give other content creators & aspiring bloggers/vloggers?
I have two pieces of advice if that’s ok? Number one is to jump straight in with two feet and no stabilisers. What’s the worst that can happen? And number two is to not worry too much about what people might think of you, be true to who you are and keep on with your unique selling point. Otherwise, you run the risk of merging into the background.
Fun/Random fact about you (go on, surprise us!):
I can turn my tongue upside down -freaky I know!
